NACE SP0892
Liquid organic linings on concrete in chemical immersion, splash and secondary containment.
SP0892 gives guidance on choosing, applying and inspecting liquid organic coatings and linings on prepared concrete that sees chemical immersion, splash, spillage or secondary containment. The 2007 edition is the latest found; older documents call it RP0892.
Why concrete needs its own guidance
Unlike steel, concrete is porous and not uniform. It holds moisture, it is alkaline, and it can absorb chemicals that then attack it from inside. Its surface may carry laitance, a weak layer that a coating cannot hold to.
What the inspector meets
- Surface cleaning and preparation, for example by abrasion (ASTM D4259) or acid etching followed by a pH check (ASTM D4262).
- Moisture tests before coating (ASTM D4263, F1869, F2170).
- Continuity testing of the lining (ASTM D4787) and adhesion on concrete (ASTM D7234).
