WFT ↔ DFT calculator, with thinner
Type a dry film thickness to get the wet film to apply, or a wet-film comb reading to get the dry film it will leave.
This tool is a reference aid. Before you act on a result, check it against your specification and the product data sheet.
The formula: WFT = DFT × (100 + thinner %) ÷ volume solids %. Without thinner, WFT = DFT × 100 ÷ VS %.
How it works
Volume solids is the share of the wet film that stays after the solvent evaporates. Thinner adds volume but no solids, so it lowers the volume solids as applied: VS as applied = VS × 100 ÷ (100 + thinner %).
Worked example
Specification 150 µm DFT, paint with 55 % volume solids, thinned 5 %. VS as applied = 55 × 100 ÷ 105 = 52.4 %. WFT = 150 ÷ 0.524 = 286 µm. Forget the thinner and you get 273 µm; multiply instead of divide and you get 79 µm.
Limits
- Read the comb straight after application, before solvent loss; on a curved surface, along the axis.
- The formula plans the wet film. Acceptance is decided by the DFT measured on the cured film.
- Switching between µm and mils converts the thicknesses already typed.
Try it in an exam-style question. The published AMPP CIP Level 1 guide lists the wet film gauge and the dry film calculation, and the FROSIO book teaches WFT and DFT with thinner. The free readiness check shows the question style and explains every answer.
