ASTM D7234
Pull-off strength of coatings on concrete.
ASTM D7234 measures how strongly a coating holds to concrete, with a portable pull-off tester. It is the concrete counterpart of ASTM D4541 for metal, which no longer has a method for concrete.
How it differs from a test on steel
- A larger dolly, usually 50 mm (2 in.), so that the test covers a fair area of a non-uniform substrate.
- The coating is cut round the dolly down to the concrete, with a core bit of the same diameter, as the method requires for thicker and reinforced coatings.
- A slow pull, at no more than about 0.2 MPa/s (30 psi/s).
Reading the result
Report the strength and where the break happened. A break in the concrete, with concrete stuck to the dolly or the back of the film, shows that the coating held better than the concrete surface. D7234 sets no pass value: the specification does.
