ASTM D4541 measures the pull-off strength of a coating on metal with a portable tester. It is the US counterpart of ISO 4624. Adhesion testing is a CIP Level 2 subject; destructive tests are outside the scope of CIP 1.

Methods and protocols

Reporting the break

Report the stress, in psi or MPa, with where the break ran. The usual way to name it is the letter scheme of ISO 4624: A/B for steel to the first coat, B within the first coat, -/Y for the last coat to the glue, Y/Z for glue to dolly. Give each share to the nearest 10 %.

Reading a glue break

A break in the glue shows only that the coating held to at least that stress. It does not show where the coating would fail. What to do next is for the specification or the job procedure to say.
