ASTM D4258 and D4259
Cleaning concrete (D4258) and abrading it (D4259) before coating.
These two practices are the first steps in preparing concrete for a coating.
- ASTM D4258 cleans: broom, vacuum, air blast, water, detergent or steam remove dirt, oil, grease and loose material. It does not change the surface profile. Used alone it suits only light-duty service, not immersion, mechanical loading or the best bond.
- ASTM D4259 abrades: grinding, impact tools, water blasting or abrasive blasting remove laitance and weak concrete and leave a roughened surface for the coating to hold.
The order
Remove oil and grease first. Abrading an oily surface drives the contamination into the concrete. Acid etching (ASTM D4260) is the other way to create a profile; after it, the rinsed surface is checked for pH with ASTM D4262.
