ISO 1461
Hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles.
ISO 1461 sets the requirements for hot-dip galvanizing done after fabrication: appearance, coating thickness and repair of uncoated areas. The zinc melt may hold at most 2 % of other metals.
What the inspector looks at
- Thickness: magnetic gauge readings, grouped over reference areas. The minimum local and mean values depend on the steel thickness. Gravimetric methods are referee techniques for the laboratory.
- A dull grey finish: not a defect in itself. Steel with more silicon reacts faster with the zinc and grows a thicker, matte coating that protects about as well. ASTM A385 explains the effect.
- White deposits: wet storage stain forms when galvanized parts are stacked wet without air. ASTM A123 accepts light or medium stain, which weathers away, and asks for heavy stain to be removed.
Galvanized steel that will be painted, a duplex system, needs its own surface preparation. See ASTM D6386.
