ISO 11124 to 11127
Specifications and test methods for blast-cleaning abrasives.
Four ISO series cover the abrasives used for blast cleaning:
- ISO 11124: requirements for metallic abrasives (steel shot and grit, chilled iron).
- ISO 11125: test methods for metallic abrasives.
- ISO 11126: requirements for non-metallic abrasives (slags, garnet, aluminium oxide and others).
- ISO 11127: test methods for non-metallic abrasives, including water-soluble contaminants and conductivity.
Reading a designation
A metallic abrasive carries a code. "ISO 11124 M/LCS/S100" means metallic, low-carbon cast steel, shot, with a nominal size of 1.00 mm. HCS stands for high-carbon cast steel, CI for chilled iron, and G for grit in place of S for shot.
Salts in the abrasive
An abrasive contaminated with salts puts them onto the steel it cleans, so abrasive checks belong in the inspection plan. ISO 11127-6 measures the soluble contaminants by conductivity: 100 g of abrasive in 100 mL of water, shaken, left for an hour and read at 20 °C. ISO 11126 sets 250 µS/cm by this method for new copper slag, coal slag and olivine.
The SSPC limit of 1,000 µS/cm uses a different method, ASTM D4940. The results of the two methods cannot be compared.
9 practice items in the members area mention ISO 11124 to 11127 (CIP 1: 3 · CIP 2: 4 · FROSIO written: 2).
