Surface preparation and conditions

ASTM D7393 is the vial test: a quick check for oil in new or recycled blast abrasive. Oil on the abrasive ends up on the blasted steel and can cause poor adhesion and film defects such as fisheyes.

The procedure

Half fill a clean, clear, sealable container with abrasive. Add clean water to a level above the abrasive, close it and shake it hard for about a minute. Let it stand, then look at the water surface. Any oil sheen or droplets reject the abrasive.

A point exams like

The vial test and the conductivity test are separate tests. The water of the vial test is not used for the conductivity test of ASTM D4940, which needs its own sample and purer water.
