Moisture vapor emission rate of a concrete slab with anhydrous calcium chloride.

**Publisher**: ASTM International

**Area**: Concrete

ASTM F1869 measures how much moisture vapor leaves a bare concrete floor. A weighed dish of anhydrous calcium chloride sits under a sealed plastic dome on the concrete; the gain in weight gives the moisture vapor emission rate (MVER).

## The procedure

- Prepare a bare concrete area of 20 × 20 in. at each test site.
- Keep the space at service conditions before and during the test.
- Leave the dish sealed for 60 to 72 hours, then weigh it again.
- Report the result as pounds of water per 1,000 ft² in 24 hours.

## The traps

The dish stays on for 60 to 72 hours; the result is only expressed per 24 hours. F1869 is a test method with no pass mark of its own: the limit comes from the coating or flooring maker or the specification. The test does not suit lightweight-aggregate or gypsum concrete, or concrete under a coating.
