Cleaning concrete (D4258) and abrading it (D4259) before coating.

**Publisher**: ASTM International

**Area**: Concrete

These two practices are the first steps in preparing concrete for a coating.

- **ASTM D4258** cleans: broom, vacuum, air blast, water, detergent or steam remove dirt, oil, grease and loose material. It does not change the surface profile. Used alone it suits only light-duty service, not immersion, mechanical loading or the best bond.
- **ASTM D4259** abrades: grinding, impact tools, water blasting or abrasive blasting remove laitance and weak concrete and leave a roughened surface for the coating to hold.

## The order

Remove oil and grease first. Abrading an oily surface drives the contamination into the concrete. Acid etching (ASTM D4260) is the other way to create a profile; after it, the rinsed surface is checked for pH with ASTM D4262.

**1** practice item in the members area mentions ASTM D4258 and D4259 (CIP 2: 1).
